An arangetram is a dancer's first solo recital, and literally translates to ascending the stage. Traditionally, students are not allowed to perform solo before completing their arangetram. India has many classical dance forms, and Bharatanatayam is considered the oldest. Bharatantayam originated in Tamil Nadu, and is belived to have been based on the concepts described in the ancient Sanskrit text the Natyashastra, which is almost 2,000 years old. Many of the stories and themes depicted in a Bharatanatyam performance are derived or rooted in Indian mythology. Over the centuries the art of Bharatanatyam has had many revivals, with the latest due to the patronage of the Tanjore Maratha kings more than 200 years ago. The present day version of Bharatantayam was created during this period.
